Probably one of the most anticipated movies of the year, 123 movies sonic 2 is the follow-up to Sonic the Hedgehog’s first adventure. The sequel is set four years after the events of the first movie, and a lot of the same characters are back. But can this movie hold up against its predecessor?
Characters
Despite being a sequel, Sonic 2 has a lot of new characters. It features two human characters that do a decent job. One is a sheriff named Tom. He and his wife, Maddie (Tika Sumpter), live in Green Hills. During the movie, Tom and Maddie go to Hawaii.
The other character, Knuckles (Idris Elba), has a connection to Sonic. He is a member of the Echidna tribe. He is searching for a powerful hidden emerald. He has also formed an alliance with Robotnik.
The Sonic game franchise is known for its obscure lore, but this is one of the most interesting games in the series. The story involves the hero’s journey and involves Sonic learning about responsibility and caring for others.
Plot
Taking place some time after the first film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a sequel to the hit video game series. This is the second film of the series to feature a new character named Tails. Tails is an alien fox who has the ability to fly. He is introduced in the second movie, and is likely to be Sonic’s best friend.
The movie continues the plot threads left unfinished from the first film. In this movie, Sonic finds himself living with Green Hills Sheriff Tom Wachowski and his wife, Maddie. They travel to Hawaii for a wedding. There, Sonic meets a new villain, Dr. Robotnik.
Characterizations
Besides the aforementioned two, there are a lot of other characters to get excited about. These characters are what give Sonic the game series depth. And they also add some laughs.
One of the coolest aspects of the Sonic 2 movie is the inclusion of human characters. This was actually a very smart move on Sega’s part. It gives them inspiration for human companions in future Sonic games. But it also breaks up the pacing of the movie.
For example, Tom and Maddie are two human friends that are perfectly suited for Sonic. And their interactions with the animals are just funny.
Another example is Knuckles. The character has a complete backstory in the game. He’s also a confident guy, which mirrors Sonic’s. He has a white swoop that resembles Nike’s symbol.
Family friendly tone
Despite a few glaring flaws, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 continues the series’ tradition of family-friendly fun. The sequel delivers plenty of nostalgic beats for old fans of the series, while still keeping its tongue in cheek tone. The movie is also packed with plenty of references to video games and secret temples.
Sonic’s parents have agreed to let him go on vacation without them. During his absence, Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) tries to do a “smarty” thing. He’s returned to Earth from Mushroom Planet, where he’s been dormant for months. But he’s still a bit of a psychopath, and he’s on the hunt for the Master Emerald.
Rotten Tomatoes score
Despite a mixed reaction from critics, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has received positive reviews from fans. The movie features Ben Schwartz as the titular blue hero, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, his friend and fellow hedghog. The movie also features Idris Elba as Knuckles.
The movie has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 68 percent. While this is an improvement from the movie’s 63% score two years ago, it is still a far cry from “fresh”. The movie’s average rating is the same, and it is possible that the movie could drop into the “rotten” range if it loses momentum.
Despite this, the movie is a hit. The movie has had a strong box office debut, and it was met with explosive cheers at the end of the movie’s credits. It was one of the top-grossing movies of 2020. It has already been released in 31 markets overseas, and it has grossed $30 million.
Is it a waste of a sequel?
Despite being one of the largest animated sequels of all time, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 isn’t a terrible film. In fact, it has some redeeming qualities, including more action, pop culture references, and an interesting video game Easter egg.
As with the original, the film has an impressive runtime, but it also has some slow moments. The storyline is not written well, and the lore building is a bit haphazard. The film is also full of pop culture references, including references to The Matrix, Harry Potter, and Batman.
A few things stand out in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The ‘Master Emerald’ is the most powerful emerald in the Sonic games. It has the power to teleport and transform into an even more powerful version of itself. There’s also a dance scene. The film has some nice set pieces, including a Siberia bar scene and a dance contest with a local dance champion.
